Case Study 6 - Client: Virtua UK
Project Overview
In response to growing connectivity demands and the increasing reliance on robust mobile communications, EE, in collaboration with Ericsson, commissioned Virtua UK to deploy a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at one of DB Cargo’s major UK operational sites. The goal was to enhance in-building mobile coverage and capacity for both staff and operational systems, enabling reliable communication and streamlined logistics.

Project Scope
-
Installation of DAS head-end equipment and associated infrastructure.
-
Deployment of multiple indoor antennas to ensure uniform coverage throughout the building.
-
Integration with EE’s macro network, managed by Ericsson.
-
Feeders Tested to EE Specification.
Challenges Faced
-
Industrial Environment: The DB Cargo site includes large warehouses with thick walls, metal structures, and varying ceiling heights, creating RF propagation challenges.
-
Minimal Operational Disruption: As a live logistics hub, installation needed to avoid disruption to day-to-day freight operations.
-
Access to many areas required a MEWP that required daily safety huddles carried out with DB Cargo Workshop foreman to make sure area would be clear of any freight trains during MEWP activities.
-
Coordination Across Stakeholders: Seamless communication between DMB, Virtua and DB Cargo was vital to maintain timelines and quality.
